Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure used by orthopedic surgeons to view and treat joint problems. In arthroscopic surgery, an orthopedic surgeon makes a small incision in the patient's skin, then inserts a pencil-sized instrument with a tiny lens and a light system that magnifies and illuminates the internal structures of the joint. Light is transmitted through fiber optics to the end of the arthroscope, which is inserted into the joint. By connecting the arthroscope to a miniature camera, the surgeon can see inside the joint through this small incision, rather than through the large incisions required for open surgery.
